Before I knew it, I was lifting weights that I only believed men should lift …

Personally, I consider myself to be a late bloomer when it comes to health and well-being. Growing up in the UK and raised on a healthy diet of anything that was processed or came out of a tin/jar, fast forward to moving overseas in my late 20’s and becoming a full time working mum, I chose to embrace the idea of taking ownership of my diet and well-being when moving to Australia in 2006. Since then I have lived an active and healthy lifestyle, which involved running, walking and biking.

After a hysterectomy in 2012, I was aware that I could possibly be facing the early onset of menopause, which often coincides with weight gain which I desperately wanted to avoid along with the possibility of taking HRT. Running was beginning to take its toll on my joints and I was advised strength training would help maintain healthy bone density.

I had never lifted anything other than a 3kg dumbbell in my life. Dan was patient, kind and encouraging. He did not pull any of the drill sergeant yelling I was half expecting from a weight training session. Before I knew it, I was lifting weights that I only believed men should lift. My body changed subtly, running had left me gaunt looking and family members were worried I was looking ill and frail. A stronger, leaner and dare I say it - sexy frame appeared! I was sleeping better and most notably my calcium levels were perfect.

More importantly, I have successfully managed to avoid HRT. I eat more than I have ever eaten and move less than I used to from flogging myself by running each day. Dan has a no-nonsense approach to personal training, Dan also has a unique ability to have you question why you are doing something, if it is no longer serving you any purpose. In the past, I have been in and out of fitness, veering from being very overweight and unfit, to training for marathons and triathlons. This has put my body under enormous stress and now I find I have a number of stress related injuries (in my feet, in particular), which means that I can no longer run or train the way I did 15 years ago.

Dan takes all of that into account when he creates your program, and the result is a training schedule perfectly tailored to you.

The atmosphere in the gym is relaxed and private, in sharp contrast to most gyms which feature harsh lighting, unforgiving mirrors, blaring music and people half my age with impossibly perfect bodies.

I look forward to going to the gym now (this is a bit of a novelty for me), because I am seeing results, and I am being trained by someone who knows their stuff, and is dedicated to helping me get into my best shape. I originally began training with Dan a couple of years ago, and in recent times, I have found that my training needs have changed.
